A few years ago, I was walking through Times Square, NY. I randomly asked someone to take my picture. We got talking & I came to know he was a fashion designer from London.
We hit it off & decided to hang around sightseeing that day. We added each other on Twitter & stayed in touch. A year after that, he introduced a friend who wanted help in building a product for her startup. I guided her, but her funding didn’t go through & my company didn’t get the project.
A few months later, she introduced me to her b-school classmate who worked in Singapore who had a project. For some reason, things didn’t materialize. A year after that, the Singapore person introduced me to someone in Canada. He needed help on tech. We bagged the project!
It turned out to be a million-dollar-deal! When I connected the dots, I was like WOW!
Had I not met the designer in NY, I wouldn’t have got this million dollar deal. Is this serendipity or random luck?
It may seem so. But the true reason was that I genuinely wanted to know him without any motive of gain. This is true networking! When you genuinely want to know people, help each other without thinking of returns, take pride in their growth and your network will one day yield massive results.
