‘Vishwas, I feel my company is not paying me well enough. I have started looking for a new job. But I’m learning & growing quite a bit here. Am I doing the right thing?’ a software engineer asked.
‘Most employees always question whether their company is paying them above industry standards or not. But they forget to ask a pertinent question. How much are you making for the company? Have you figured out what is the impact you are making for your company? Are you an Asset to your company? These are questions you need to ask & justify as you grow in your career,’ I replied.
‘I have never thought about it that way. I have no clue how much money I’m making for my company,’ he responded.
‘Well, if you quit & join another company, you might get 20-30% more salary but if you can figure out a way to help your current company win and quantify how much increase in revenue/profit/valuation you are able to create, it would take your salary 100-200% more in a few years. Something which job hopping would never get you,’ I advised.
Bottomline- Become a revenue & profit creator for your company. Quantify your impact. Showcase it to all key stakeholders. Automatically, you will get promotions, salary hikes, bonus & power. This is a simple mantra. Try it!
