Vishwas, my English is not good & because of this I’m not getting promoted or getting better jobs. I feel this is discrimination. What should I do?’ – received this question from a professional.
Well, I don’t want to give you false assurances that having poor English is fine & you can progress rapidly in your career without improving it. If you are in an industry that requires you to speak with English speaking clients, colleagues or stakeholders, there is nothing you can do about it. The only option is to work on your English & get damn good at it.
Don’t get into a debate whether it’s discrimination or not. That won’t help you at all. Moreover, it’s not that hard to improve. It needs discipline, efforts & practice. Find people who can talk to you only in English, you will pick it up within no time. Also, you don’t have to be a Shakespeare, just focus on effective communication. That’s all.
Further, this holds good for any language. For e.g. if you want to build a great career in France, learning French is essential. So, this debate is not about English, it’s about the very essence of effective communication.
Bottomline: Stop looking for excuses. Get out of your comfort zone & learn English. That’s the only way to progress in your career. Period.
